The Deal has been made [Dec. 1st, 2006|01:19 am]
Najwa

After interviews, meetings, negotiations, and planning, David Hanson has been asked to join the world's best (or most famous), cutting edge team of robotics and AI researchers: Professor Ishiguro's team at Osaka University. They will create the baby android, "Zeno". It is going to be announced today, but you can say you heard it here first on El Jay.
David's sculpture of the baby android, his unique android skin "frubber", and his proprietary mechanics and engineering of robotic faces, has satisfied the ATR's R&D criteria for the next three years. They have the resources and investors to build and market Zeno the character robot. David will be a research professor at the university for one semester out of each year, and Hanson Robotics will still be located in Texas and retain all it's IP. The deal is so sweet because they need David's research to jump their research to the next level. Every engineering and aesthetic problem they have come up against, he has already solved. For example, his patented skin "frubber" will make their robots look, and move, quite a bit more real and natural.

That is awesome.

If you have time, seek out the ferris wheel atop "The Five" shopping center while you are in Osaka. It is an awesome veiw of the city.

I keep seeing that thing when we take the train around town. I might not be able to this time, but I will next time. :)
Come visit me.
When were you here?

IMHO I think Prof. Ishiguro is the lucky one. Form the stories you told me about Q-1 and the research I've seen online the Professor should be extremely happy and count himself lucky that an outfit like HR is lending its talents to the project.

It begs the question, though, would a baby android be easier to program and replicate due to the lack of developed motor skills? I suppose not. The last thing you'd want is a brephoid (artificial baby) twitching spasmodically in a room full of potential investors.
